Lucy Wilson
Lucy Wilson was born in Ilkley, West Yorkshire and visited Staithes regularly throughout her childhood. She moved to the village in 1996.
She has been interested in painting all her life. She is self-taught and has developed through experience her own technique for observing the familiar sights and views of Staithes. The quirky little cottages with smoking chimneys, boats bobbing in the beck, the sheltering cliffs, fossils, shells and seaweed on the timeline and the cobbled streets from Cowbar round to Penny Steel: all feature in Lucy’s work.
Lucy paints in acrylics on wooden panels, cutting in some of the outlines first with a knife. Occasionally she works on driftwood and allows the wood itself, worn by the sea, to dictate the shape of the painting.
